Super Simple Sugar Scrub Recipe for Complete Beginners

If you asked me what is the best, first DIY skin care project for absolute beginners, I would say hands-down a sugar scrub. And here's why.

First, sugar scrubs are so super simple to make. You can't mess them up, and if you do you can always fix them. So they're great for people who are a little timid with DIY.

Second, they come together in just seconds and use ingredients you already have on hand. No need for specialty ingredients or tools. Just stir together sugar and oil and boom! You've made a sugar scrub.

Lastly, the results they give are immediate and impressive.

After just one use your skin will feel soft and silky, and after several uses you'll notice your skin is more supple and moisturized.

Even if this is your very first foray into handmade skin care, you're going to get an amazing, pro-quality product. Start with just two ingredients, or customize it the way you like. I've got some ideas for doing so below.

This is a fun product to make for a girl's night, or an easy sleepover craft for teens and tweens.

RECIPE: Simple Sugar Body Scrub

This recipe makes just over 8 ounces of scrub, or enough for 4 whole-body scrubs or 20 hand or foot scrubs.

Here's what you'll need:

1 cup granulated white sugar

1/3 to 1/2 cup vegetable oil (such as olive oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, etc. Use whatever you have in your pantry.)

Optional ingredients: 25 drops essential oil, 1 teaspoon dried herbs or dried flower petals, 2 to 5 drops food coloring

STEP 1: Place sugar into a bowl. Add in oil and stir until well blended. Start with 1/3 cup.

If the sugar scrub seems too dry for your liking, add up to 3 tablespoons more oil until you get the consistency you like. Remember, this is personal preference so don't worry about "messing up." You won't, I promise.

STEP 2: If you'd like to dress up your sugar scrub, you can do so now. (Although it makes a really nice scrub as-is.)

Stir in essential oils of your choice for scent, dried herbs or dried flower petals (they must be dried, not fresh). Other fun add-ins are cocoa powder, dry clay, or ground coffee beans1 teaspoon measurement for each.

If you'd like a colored scrub, add 2 to 5 drops of food coloring and stir very well. If you're using a darker colored oil, like olive, this will affect the color of your finished scrub so you may need to add a few extra drops to get the color you're looking for.

STEP 3: Once you're happy with your scrub, package it in a small container with a lid. I've used mason jars and upcycled jelly jars, but I've got a freakin' obsession with these jars and wooden scoops. They look so cute lining the bathroom counter, and the 8 ounce size is perfect for this sugar scrub.

TO USE: Massage over entire body in the bath or shower, using circular motions. Rinse well with warm water. Take care; this can make the tub or shower floor slippery!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Never store your sugar scrub in the shower or dip into the jar with damp hands. Water will cause bacteria, mold, and yeast to grow in your product (ewwww!) Instead, scoop out a single use (several tablespoons) into a shatter-proof container and take that into the shower with you. Leave the full jar nicely dry on your shelf.
