5 Easy Ways To Use Honey In DIY Skin Care

Here are 5 easy ways to use honey in skin care remedies you can make at home. Plus some awesome skin benefits of honey. By Angela Palmer at Farm Girl Soap Co.

I think honey has got to be one of the most miraculous foods ever. Did you know that bees must visit two million flowers to make one pound of honey? Or that one bee makes only a tiny 1/12th teaspoon of honey in their lifetime? I find that fascinating.

Honey is way more than just a sweetener. It actually contains trace minerals, prebiotics, and probiotics, so it's a healthy way to sweeten up your day.

I like to incorporate honey into my skin care regimen too. Honey is fabulous for the skin.

Honey smoothes and softens the skin. It also brightens the complexion and leaves the skin plump, dewy, and hydrated.

Using raw honey, rather than the processed ones, will net you the best results because all the good stuff hasn't been cooked out of it.

Ready to add some honey into your skin care routine? Here are five easy ways to do it.

1. Use it as an ultra simple DIY honey face mask.

Warm a small amount of honey (about 1 teaspoonful) and gently massage it onto your face. Let it set for 10-20 minutes. Remove with a warm cloth and rinse. Your skin will look amazing!

2. Make an all-natural DIY honey bath soak.

Cleopatra bathed in milk and honey, and you deserve to as well.  This is one of my favorite bath recipes of all time!

Add 1 cup Epsom salt, 1/2 cup milk, and 1/4 cup honey into running bath water. Soak for at least 20 minutes. Your skin will feel so smooth afterward.

3. Make a moisturizing DIY honey hair treatment.

Honey also makes a great hair treatment that fights frizz and moisturizes at the same time.

Warm up two tablespoons honey with 2 tablespoons olive oil (if your hair is really long or thick, double this recipe). The honey and oil won't mix, but that's OK. Just stir as best you can, then work into your hair from scalp to tips.

Pin your hair up; bonus points if you have a shower cap. Make sure you're wearing an old shirt, because this hair treatment is messy.  Let it set for 30 minutes to an hour. Wash your hair as usual.

4. Stir up a skin-softening DIY honey scrub.

Mix 2 tablespoons honey with 1/4 cup oil and 1/2 cup sugar. While in the bath or shower, massage this mixture over your entire body, paying special attention to any rough areas like hands, feet, elbows and knees. Massage well and rinse off.

5. Steep a soothing DIY honey under-eye treatment.

This under-eye treatment is extra gentle but extra potent. It's perfect for reducing puffiness around the eyes.

Mix 1/4 cup strong brewed white or green tea with 1/2 teaspoon honey. Stir until the honey is completely dissolved.

Soak two cotton balls in this mixture and place them over each eye. Let set on the eyes for 20 minutes. I'll often make myself a cup of tea with honey, remove a small amount for this eye treatment and sip the rest—a two-for-one self-care treatment!

Try different varieties to find which honey you like best.

There are so many varieties of honey available, and while they don't have huge differences in skin care benefits it's still fun to try them all. They will differ in their taste, scent, and color.

So far, I really like blackberry honey. And I am longing to try buckwheat honey.

I've even been playing around with the idea of starting my own hive. That would be exciting.
