DIY Peppermint Lip Balm - Easy All-Natural Recipe

A super simple DIY peppermint lip balm recipe. All you need are 3 ingredients. Even better, it's all natural and super easy to make!

Learn how to make DIY peppermint lip balm with this easy all-natural recipe. Just 3 ingredients!

I am completely addicted to lip balm.  I have tubes of it stashed everywhere -- in my purse, in the kitchen, on the shelf by my back door.

Store bought lip balm, and I'm talking about the "good stuff," can get expensive. But handcrafted balm is a fairly easy product to make, and will save you money in the long run.

Plus you can customize it any way you like. My favorite is always peppermint, though.

This Peppermint Lip Balm recipe uses ingredients that you can find at your local health food store or craft store. It's completely natural and so good for your lips.

Buy cute tins or tubes to package your lip balms, and you'll have a scrumptious product that looks and performs just like those pricey store-bought balms, only for pennies apiece.

RECIPE: Easy DIY Peppermint Lip Balm

This recipe makes about 1 oz. of lip balm, enough to fill about 5 tubes or 3-4 pots, depending on size. If you like a softer, shinier balm, add the castor oil. If you like a smoother, firmer balm, leave it out.

Here's What You'll Need:

1 tablespoon white beeswax pellets

2 tablespoons sweet almond oil

Optional: 1/4 teaspoon castor oil

Lip balm containers (In the pics below I used both these round lip balm containers and these adorable heart containers, but you can use lip balm tubes as well.)

STEP 1: In a small heat-safe bowl, add beeswax, sweet almond oil, and castor oil.

The castor oil gives the lip balm some shine on your lips. If you're giving some to your guy pals, I'd leave this out. They tend not to like super shiny lips!

STEP 2: Place the bowl into a pan filled with a small amount of water. Place this make-shift double boiler onto the stove top on low heat. Warm until beeswax is completely melted.

Alternatively, you can microwave for short bursts, stirring frequently, until beeswax is completely melted.

STEP 3: Add peppermint essential oil and stir well.

Just a note, essential oil is not the same as peppermint extract (the type you use in cooking) and it's not interchangeable. Peppermint extract is water-soluble, and won't mix into your lip balm oils.

You can add a pinch of mica or lip balm colorant to give your lip balm a pepperminty-pink color, or leave uncolored.

STEP 4: Working quickly, pour into lip balm containers.

If you pour on the slow and careful side, your lip balm will start to solidify before you can pour it all into your containers. (This happens to me every time.) Just curse at it a bit, and then use a spoon or rubber spatula to scrape the semi-solid lip balm back down into the dish.

Rewarm slightly, either in the microwave or on the stove top, to liquefy again and have another go at pouring.

It's OK to continue pouring into a half-filled container. It will all smooth out and look perfect in the end.

STEP 5:Let your lip balm set uncapped and undisturbed until cool, about 1 to 2 hours.

Affix lids and you lip balm is ready to use! Enjoy it!
