How To Make Oatmeal Masks: The Secret to Making the Best DIY Oatmeal Face Masks (and Oatmeal Soap Too!)

Learn how to make the best DIY oatmeal face mask recipes and handmade oatmeal soap with this ONE easy tip.

There's a secret to making smooth, just-like-store-bought oatmeal face masks (and soap, bath soaks... basically any handmade skin care product that contains oatmeal.

And oatmeal is used A LOT in skin care, in both professional and DIY products. It truly is the perfect skin care ingredient for all skin types.

Oatmeal is:
  • Gentle and soothing
  • Deeply cleansing
  • Oil-absorbing (but not drying)
  • Softening and smoothing
  • Anti-inflammatory, redness reducing, and anti-itch
All of this and inexpensive too! You probably have oatmeal in your kitchen cabinets right now.
Ever had an oatmeal mask clump, not mix well, or slide right off your face? Here's how to fix it!
But if you've ever tried to make it into a DIY facial mask or stir oatmeal into your soap base, you'll find it doesn't feel all that great. It's thick and lumpy, and doesn't mix into a product well.

Your mask clumps up, doesn't glide on well, and you end up with chunks of oat sliding off your face. Your oatmeal soap leaves whole oats stuck to your body and all over your shower floor.

Not. Very. Appealing.

There is a super duper easy thing you can do, though, that immediately takes your oatmeal skin care products from humdrum to pro. Blend it up!

Blending your oatmeal into a fine powder first makes it so much easier to use in skin care products.
  • All of your products are easier to make and use, because finely ground oats mix into your soap and skin care, and spread across the skin, more smoothly.
  • Your products have a creamier consistency and feel better on the skin. No big ol' pieces of oats sticking to you and sliding around.
  • It's easier on your pipes and sewer/septic system. No thick clumps of oatmeal being washed down the drain.
You'll  also get more of the benefits of oatmeal for your skin because more of the oats are able to come in contact with your skin (think of how spreading a blended oatmeal product gives better coverage to your skin rather than whole oats sitting on your face.)

Blending also releases more of the oat's skin-healthy goodness, making it more available for your skin to take up.

Ninety-nine percent of the oatmeal recipes I create call for "finely ground oats" or "oatmeal powder" because of these benefits. You can make some yourself in less time than it took you to read this article!

How To Make Oatmeal Powder

I like to use this oatmeal powder as-is in my morning cleanser. I just work up a good lather with my goat's milk soap, add a generous pinch of oatmeal powder, and I have a gentle daily scrub. It leaves the skin feeling so smooth.

What will you make with your oatmeal powder?

STEP 1: Put 1 cup old-fashioned oats, dry and uncooked, into a blender.

STEP 2: Blend for at least 30 seconds. The longer you blend the oatmeal, the finer and softer a powder you'll end up with.

For facial masks, you'll want very fine powder.  For more "scrubbiness" to your products, leave the oatmeal a bit more coarse.

STEP 3: Pour the powder into a jar. That's all there is to it! Whenever you need a bit for your soap and skin care products it'll be ready and waiting.

SHELF LIFE: This powder will stay fresh for about a year.

Now you're ready to incorporate this lovely oatmeal into some incredible DIY products. Try these:
